The Weston Friendly Society of the Performing Arts, Inc., the second oldest theater group in the United States, is proud to announce its 125th Anniversary Season! We have an exciting season planned, featuring two musicals never before done by the Weston Friendly Society, as well as a special 125th Anniversary show and party to celebrate the group and the many people who have made it so successful throughout its rich history.

It is partly through our annual donors and their generous support that we exist today. It is these annual tax-deductible contributions that help allow us to honor our mission as a non-profit performing arts organization which promotes community service and fellowship through the support of local charitable causes. On behalf of last year’s charitable recipients, Children’s Charter of Waltham and Weston Cub Scout Pack 222, as well as the Condakes and John Barclay Memorial Scholarship Funds and WFS Drama Award, we sincerely thank you for all your support.

We are thrilled with our 125th season. In November, we will bring one of the most beloved family books to life with Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. This classic story recounts the poignant and funny story of Anne Shirley, the spunky, red-headed orphan who comes to Prince Edward Island hoping to find a happy home. Adapted by Donald Harron from the novel by L. M. Montgomery, with music by Norman Campbell, Anne of Green Gables: The Musical is sure to be a hit with the entire family.

Next Spring will bring one of musical theater’s masterpieces, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel, to the Weston stage. In 1999, Time magazine, it its “Best of the Century” list, named Carousel the Best Musical of the 20th century, writing that Rodgers and Hammerstein “set the standards for the 20th century musical.” With a moving and dramatic storyline and hit songs like “If I Loved You,” “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” and the timeless “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” it is easy to understand why the show received this distinction.

Since it is our 125th season, the Weston Friendly has planned a special event on January 23, 2010 to celebrate the occasion. This gala evening will include entertainment provided by Weston favorites of both the past and present. As a thank you for all the years of support the community has given us, refreshments will be served.

We are well aware of the strain our current economy has placed on charitable gifts this year. However, we hope that you will consider giving your most generous financial support so that we can continue providing quality entertainment to the community and allow us to aid our local charities. All donors (Friend and above) will be listed in the season’s programs, and as always donations of any amount are appreciated. For those of you who wish to either continue being or to become a supporter of the Weston Friendly Society, we greatly appreciate your tax-deductible contribution and are pleased to offer complimentary tickets as detailed below. If you have already submitted a donation for this season, we thank you! Each Angel/Benefactor/Friend/Member, as a special added bonus this season, will also receive complimentary ticket(s) to the 125th Anniversary special event in January.

If you are unable to become a donor at this time, but love to come and enjoy the Weston Friendly Society’s shows, we encourage you to become a subscriber today, for you can save between $4.00 and $39.00! Not only that, but you get first chance at seats for performances, as you will be the first to be notified when tickets become available. If you are looking to give back in other ways, we warmly encourage you to join our volunteer corps! As you can imagine, our productions require a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes assistance with things like building and painting sets, making or tailoring costumes, finding props, publicity and selling tickets, and ushering.
